Media relations training

Media coverage is a powerful and cost-effective way of reaching large audiences. Not sure how to sell your story and liaise with journalists? I offer media relations training sessions in Cardiff and across Wales.

Who’s it for?

Anyone working in a charity or non-profit who wants to gain media coverage. This includes people new to communications, as well as experienced comms folk who want to develop media relations skills.

Why take part?

We may be living in the age of Netflix and Tiktok, but the ability to secure and manage traditional media coverage remains a vital skill for charities and non-profits.

Research by Ofcom shows that a massive 64% of us in Wales watch TV news, and 48% use news apps and websites. That’s a huge audience, and it would be hard to reach that number of people with social media posts!

And it’s not just about reach. Media relations is a very effective way of influencing politicians and other decision-makers too.

What does it involve?

Each session can be tailored to your organisation. A typical half-day session (1:1 or in small groups) includes:

  • Explanation of media landscape
  • What makes a good story and what reporters are looking for
  • How to build media contacts and work with journalists
  • Preparing media assets and selling your story
  • How to write an effective press release
  • Review/feedback on recent media work
  • Discussion and advice on media strategy

Why choose me?

I’m a seasoned communications trainer, having run courses and workshops for clients including NUJ Training Wales, Wales TUC and Cardiff University.

I’m also an experienced former journalist (ITV Wales) and charity communications manager and spokesperson (WWF Cymru).
